How much does house cleaning cost in Australia?

From this article we will show you current average prices for cleaning per hour, we will also show you how many hours should be allowed depending on the size of your property.

From our research, the house cleaning cost of a cleaner per hour is between $27 to $45 for regular and occasional cleaning services.

While most independent cleaning contractors would charge $27 per hour, therefore avoiding any agency fees. On the other hand, this has both pros and cons, a pro is that you may save some dollars every month, the cons is that in the case of damage the cleaner may not have the means to pay the financial cost of repair or if the cleaner requires sick leave or annual leave, there will not be another cleaner to take the shift.

Most agencies’ average price is a minimum of $33 per hour. To clarify, the cleaning pricing may also range up to $45 per hour. Bear in mind; the national minimum wage is currently $19.49 per hour, according to Fairwork.gov.au (May 2020). Hence, the agencies will pay the cleaners over the minimum rate ($19.49) and still have to make a profit.

Overall, the general clean is very basic. Now, I have a tip to save on the house cleaning cost… if you have a large house and some areas of your house are not being used, you can skip them on every other clean, this way you can save between 30 minutes to one hour on your clean saving you money. You should describe specifically what your needs are to your cleaning agency.

Estimated time depending on the size of the property

We have prepared the below estimate as a general guideline, as a homeowner or lessee you know your property best, and you should be able to provide a gut feeling estimate on the time required to clean your property.

Always make sure you allow for enough time. The best way to understand if the time allowed is enough is by communicating with your cleaner after completing the first day, after all these years of experience the house cleaner will tell you exactly what they need to get your home the way you expect.

Next, less assess the potential cost of each property depending on the hours’ estimate above.

1 Bedroom/2 Bedrooms by 1 Bathroom – $66 (range between $27 to $90)

The estimated time to clean this size property is 2 hours. Using a standard cleaning agency you should be paying around $66.

Bear in mind, not many cleaning agencies go to work for less than 2 hours.

The reason for that is that the house cleaners will have to transport themselves for at least 15 – 20 minutes each way, so it may not be worth having to travel for almost the same amount of time than the job itself.

3 Bedrooms/4 Bedrooms by 2 Bathrooms/1 Bathroom (respectively)- $132 (range between $108 to $180)

The estimated time to clean this size property is 4 hours. Using a standard cleaning agency you should be paying around $132.

Now, the size of the property, in this case, is getting a bit big, but let’s not get too alarmed. I would dare to say that for this size of properties you may already have a family with kids or in the plans to expand your family.

Therefore, you are going to need all the assistance you can get to keep up with the chores. Subsequently, 4 hours in our view will get you the cleaning done.

This means that you will not have to worry about the cleanliness of your home for another week.

Trying to get the house done in less time may involve either skipping certain areas, alternatively, you could direct your cleaner to pass through certain areas real quick… i.e. just vacuuming on the rooms only.

2 Bedrooms by 1 Bathroom / 2 Bathrooms – $99 (range between $81 to $135)

The estimated time to clean this size property is 3 hours. Using a standard cleaning agency you should be paying around $99 (let’s round it up to $100).

This cost is very common within the industry, the trick here is knowing your property and knowing exactly what you want…

You could still seek for the standard minimum 2 hours clean, however, you would need to sacrifice certain areas of your house to be completed on every second week or every second fortnight, I’m purely talking about regular cleaning.

If this is a casual clean.. just forget it.. you will need the 3 hours straight…

4 Bedrooms/5 Bedrooms by 2 Bathrooms – $165 (range between $135 to $225)

The estimated time to clean this size property is 5 hours, that is right…. you have a large prop[erty and it requires a proportional measured action.

Using a standard cleaning agency you should be paying around $165.

Let’s find the right words to describe it… firstly we may need a map of your house… then… we can get to clean it…

I would dare to say for this size of the property, having a clean done in less than 5 hours you would have to lower your expectation on the quality of the clean to start with.

However, who am I kidding, within our hearts, none one wants to do that, we need to feel like when we get back home from work or picking up the kids or the groceries we walk into a sanctuary, a holy place… where even the breathing soul of the house has been cleaned, then we feel it… it feels right.

With regards to any larger properties, including a 5 bedroom and 3 bathrooms. Let’s be honest, you will need a team of at least two cleaners to give you a hand or expect the cleaner to spend the day with you. That is to say, our cleaners have different backgrounds and can easily tell you great stories and experiences in Australia for which you may find entertaining while they get your cleaning done.

In Conclusion

Finally, bear in mind that cleaning agencies offer hourly services. So let’s say you have a house with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, you may only want some assistance with the kitchen and the bathrooms, then get a cleaner for 2 – 3 hours to give you a hand, you then achieve completing two of the critical areas of the property and have peace of mind.

Now, to close this article, in short, I’ll share you my biggest tip of them all, always engage with an agency, their job is to have your back, independent cleaning contractors may not always be able to meet your needs (i.e. annual leave or sick leave) and maybe a risk when talking about accidental damage.

If you have had any funny experiences, likewise, if you have heard some crazy stories from your cleaners share it with us, we would like to hear from you. If you are wondering how to find a cleaner in Australia,  have a read to How can I find a cleaner near me?
